Video article by Ema Tavolo on "Foreign Objects", a solo exhibition at Fresh Art Gallery Otara Auckland NZ 2012:
I really wanted this to be like a museum.
Also to get a sense of what is really out there in the online world: how collections are made and how they operate now. In the past - before the internet - collectors operated in a very controlled niche, very small, almost like a club. But now the boundaries are down, and any one can be a collector, anyone can get these objects off the internet.
I ended up discovering in my search that there were blanket, across-the-board tags that collectors would use to lure buyer in. What I found was that “hula girl” was the term for the Polynesian pacific woman, she wasn’t even being addressed as a woman.
